More Than a Market – We’re a Community!

For over 50 years the Grain Train has been a thriving natural foods market in downtown Petoskey.

From its beginnings as a buying club in 1971, to the small walk-up on Mitchell Street, the first storefront on Howard Street, planning and building the store at our current location, and the opening of the Grain Train Neighborhood Market in Boyne City in 2014, it’s been an incredible journey. We owe our success to you, our loyal customers and owners, who have supported us for over five decades.

Ownership

Simply, our owners own the store. We offer fresh produce, packaged goods, supplements, beauty products, wine, beer, and other items that align with our mission, product guidelines, and the interests of our owners. As an owner, you help shape the store’s direction by voting each year for Board of Directors candidates and for major decisions like By-Law changes. You make the decisions that guide the store. Your voice matters!

Become an Owner

Becoming an owner is easy. Benefits begin with your first payment and you only need to join once.

You start with a $25 payment when you sign up, followed by $25 annually until you reach a total investment of $200. Alternatively, pay the full $200 upfront and receive a $10 gift card for doing so!

Your equity is yours, and if you choose to stop being an owner, you can request a refund. Equity is generally refundable, however, the Board retains the right to withhold refunds when necessary to protect the financial well being of the co-op. To obtain a refund of your equity, merely submit a letter stating that you would like a refund, for any reason.
